I was planning to just post something on Facebook, but this deserves a full on rant and I'm deliberately writing about this and not the Navy Yard shooting because I don't know what to say to people that feel the need to own a gun without significant regulation is more important than keeping them out of the hands of dangerous people. If this statement got you going, read on I got lots more.
Ok... so this is in response to the uproar from the right about the NEW beautiful Miss America, Nina Davuluri pictured to the left in her traditional Hindu garb.
A slew of racist Tweets emerged when she was crowned, much like the Tweets posted when Amandla Stenberg appeared as the character Rue in the Hunger Games, remember that?
Even Todd Starnes of Fox News or as I like to call them Faux News adding fuel to the fire with a Tweet about who the "real Miss America" should have been.
So for those out there that feel the new Miss America does not represent American values I say STFU! This is for all the champions of the status quo, the adversaries of advancement pining away for the "good ole days" when doctors told you how good cigarettes were for you on commercials, battered wives stayed inside or wore huge sunglasses to hide abuse and people like Nina and myself had our own special drinking fountains and entrances. No she's not African American but racism makes no special distinctions for the oppressed.
I believe Malcolm said it best when he said "The chickens have come home to roast." The misguided hatred and xenophobia of some has had a hand in shaping the America we live in today.
What did they think would happen when they stole people from warm shores, stole their family, their culture, their dignity, their lives and after building this country, freed them in a bipolar war contrition?
What did they think would happen when they told their sons to be fearsome and strong then taught them that black men were the most feared creatures to walk the Earth? It doesn't take a behavioral psychologist to figure out you'll have two results. Violence and admiration. Yes admiration, in wanting to be feared and identifying with that rebellious strength. Why else would white teens, sag their pants, speak with the confident vernacular of the street or proudly be the primary consumers of Hip Hop (just check out the audience of any concert)?
What did they think would happen when they told their women that Black and Spanish men are sexual deviants, without taking the time to realize some of their women want to be deviated? What is more alluring than the forbidden?
Now they seem surprised when they wake up to an America with a black president, a strong female candidate for the next president, and a Miss America that challenges the once accepted standards of beauty that has long undervalued diversity. Yes buddy the tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to breathe free, have become productive citizens raising families, adding to the GDP and changing the complexion of this great country.
Welcome to the United States of America, where you are not identified by physical features or any single cultural heritage but by an ideal and a belief that all men are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.
God Bless America ya'll.
